The History of the Town of Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz
Neumarkt lies in the heart of Bavaria, more or less midway between Nuremberg and Regensburg. In the Middle Ages it lay on one of the most important trade routes in the Holy Roman Empire, which ran from Frankfurt to Vienna. The Neue Markt or “New Market” first appeared around 1160 at the junction of this trade route with the road leading from Amberg to Landshut. Thanks to its convenient location it quickly gained considerable importance as a trading centre. The town was endowed with imperial privileges and provided with a fortification.
