Castle Wolfstein

back to overview

The ruins of Castle Wolfstein are located high above Neumarkt, right on the edge of the Franconian Alb. For centuries the castle was the ancestral seat of the Sülzburg-Wolfsteiner, one of the most important noble families in the Oberpfalz. It’s not known exactly when the structure was first built, but the earliest documentary proof of its existence dates from the year 1283. This was when Gottfried von Sülzburg took on the name Wolfstein, thereby becoming the founder of the Wolfstein dynasty.
